Mazhamizhi, a multimedia streaming project aimed at helping the artistes’ community by showcasing their work online to Malayalis across the world, kicked off their filming from the Northern part of Kerala recently, at the Kerala Kalamandalam. The event was inaugurated at the Koothambalam by Dr TK Narayanan, Vice Chancellor of the Kerala Kalamandalam. General Convenor of Mazhamizhi and Bharat Bhavan member secretary Pramod Payyannoor delivered the introductory address, while Kalamandalam Sooryanarayanan, Head of the Kathakali Dept, welcomed the gathering. Academic co-ordinator Kalamandalam V Achyuthanandan offered felicitations while Mohiniyattam teachers Kalamandalam Vidyarani extended the vote of thanks.

The performance started off with a Kelikottu followed by the filming of 11 art forms — Sopanasangeetham, violin, flute, swaravenu, Koodiyattam, Chendamelam, Mukharshankhu, Layatharangam, Tabala, Carnatic music, Mohiniyattam and Kathakali. Nearly 25 art forms will be presented on stage in the three-day programme. Further filming of Mazhamizhi will be held from August 12 onwards at Palakkad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

The Mazhamizhi project, which aims to provide a helping hand to the artists’ community who are struggling to survive during the Covid times, is an initiative of Bharat Bhavan, in association with the Dept of Cultural Affairs, the Chalachitra Academy, Folklore Academy, Lalita Kala Akademi, Guru Gopinath Nadana Gramam and the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.

Nearly 150 art forms and 350 artistes will be featured in the first stage of the 65-day mega-streaming project which will be held from August 28, World Humanitarian Day, to the Kerala Piravi Day, November 1. The artists are selected by a jury panel composed of experts from various academies.

The webcasting will be held from 7 pm to 9 pm in the page samskarikam.org.

Following Mazhamizhi, more financial help from the Dept of Cultural Affairs will reach the artistes’ community through programmes like Thalirmizhi and Vasanthamizhi.
