Bollywood film Mimi raises several concerns around surrogacy in India. Commercial surrogacy comes with health, mental hazards. It can’t become a poverty eradication programme.

Dr. Sheela Suryanarayanan (Saravanan) is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Hyderabad. Her research focuses on maternal health and assisted reproductive technologies such as birthing practices, prenatal screening and selective abortions and surrogacy. She authored ‘A Transnational Feminist View of Surrogacy Biomarkets in India’. She played an important role in the Draft Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill 2019.
