    Kalamandalam Kuttan Asan was known for his role of Dakshan

    Veteran Kathakali artist and guru Kalamandalam Kuttan Asan, 84, passed away today at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna. Kuttan Asan was a disciple of Kalamandalam Ramankutty Asan and Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair. He had his debut on stage, performing as ‘Krishnan’ in Subhadraharanam Kathakali, at the age of 12. Started his career as a teacher at Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam at Irinjalakuda in 1964, Kuttan asan, later became the Principal of the institution.

    He was known as Dakshan Kuttan as he focussed largely on the role of Dakshan.

    Winner of several awards including Kerala Kalamandalam award, Kathakali award from the Kerala State Government and Keerthi Mudra award, Kuttan Asan has many disciples spread across the globe.
